Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom's sequel is Shadow over Mystara. After the heroes fought Arch Lich Deimos two years ago, a new enemy emerged: a strong sorceress called Synn is preparing to capture the Republic of Darokin. Shadow over Mystara is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up with role-playing aspects that set it apart from other similar games at the time. The game has standard D&D monsters, locations, and playable characters and is set in the Dungeons & Dragons campaign world of Mystara and
Each of the six playable characters has its own set of talents, strengths, and weaknesses: cleric, dwarf, elf, warrior, thief, and wizard. The characters can equip various weapons and armor, as well as employ special powers. Magic users can cast a broad variety of magical spells. As the characters earn experience, they obtain new spells and abilities. Numerous game mechanics are based on D&D rules, such as a thief's ability to find locked chests and a cleric's ability to transform undead. The game offers many endings and branching routes.
