The Rats is a survival horror text-based adventure game that runs on the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum computers. It is based on the novel of the same name by James Herbert.

The player plays as the main character Harris. The player has to select one or more verbal options to perform actions to allow Harris progress against the rat threat and ensure he doesn't get killed. If Harris dies, the game is over.

Besides Harris, the player will be frequently playing as minor characters trying to stay alive from the rat threat. While it is not crucial to keep them alive, saving them grants the player additional reinforcements and research to aid against the rat threat.

The game also includes simulation sequences that allow the player to strategically send reinforcements to areas where the rat threat grows.
