Megatack Description

Megatack is a horizontal shooter arcade game developed by Taiyo System and licensed by Centuri in 1980. Taiyo System is a software system developer and device system engineering company based in Yokohama Japan. Centuri is a Florida-based company that distributes coin-operated machine licensed by various foreign manufacturers to arcades in U.S.A during the ’80s. The company was formerly known as Allied Leisure Inc. until it was acquired by Ed Miller and Bill Olliges who were known to head a relatively famous game company called Taito of America. Some space shooter arcade games published by this company include Phoenix, Challenger, Time Pilot, Guzzler, and Tunnel Hunt.

Megatack is a space shooter arcade game where players battle against different space creatures trying to approach their spaceship and destroy it. Apart from regular space monsters that flood the field of play once the game starts, there are also motherships in form of giant rings floating at the topmost part of the screen after each round of regular space aliens. Instead of having bosses appear after a wave of regular space monsters, the game alternates regular levels with the difficult levels. The regular monsters emerge at the top of the screen and slowly make their way down to where the player’s ship is stationed, players must then destroy each of them as they approach. The monsters who manage to escape projectiles from the player’s spaceship tries to crash into the spaceship once they reach the bottom part of the screen. Also in this round of the game, space monsters are about 25 in number but only 8 of them are present on the screen at the same time.

Players’ spaceship is armed with a gun system which can fire in three directions at the same time. In every other screen, players battle against giant ring motherships. These motherships start out small, gradually increase in size and split into two smaller rings when they are hit just once. The smaller rings grow and become huge enough to suck the player’s spaceship into them like a vacuum. Once rings of motherships grow into vacuums, the player’s controls are frozen and they lose control of their ships until it is sucked in. All rings in this round are worth the same points as the space monsters in that level. If the space monsters that come in the previous round are worth 100 points, the mothership rings in the second round are worth the same points.

After successfully conquering 9 stages of space monsters, the 10th screen brings all types of monsters from all nine screens which the player must then destroy to win the game. In the first wave, space monsters are worth 100 points each. The second wave features space monsters that award 200 points when they are destroyed.
